Traditionally, apart from the Wendat and the Mohawk, the First Nations practiced hunting, fishing and gathering to meet their food needs. Vegetable gardening, a late addition, was integrated into the communities following the sedentarization of the First Nations.
Only a few communities are located on land suitable for agriculture. This is the case, for example, for the communities located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands such as the Mohawk, the Wendat, the Mig’maq, and the W8banaki. The other communities are located on the Canadian Shield, a territory that is less fertile and more suited to mining and forestry activities. Our documentary research allowed us to identify agricultural activities in the communities of Wemotaci, Kanesatake, Akwesasne, Listuguj, Opitciwan, and Chisasibi.
