Food waste management is not directly linked to food security, but it is still part of the food system as the resulting compost nourishes the soil.
While walking around Ekuanitshit, you might see commercial trucks displaying a red and yellow logo that says “compost”. These trucks make the rounds of the community’s residences to collect food scraps directly at the door. Once the rounds are completed, the scraps are transferred to a wooden compost bin where they enter the primary putrefaction phase. Once this phase is completed, they are then placed in a rotating composting bin where the rotting food turns into compost ready to be mixed with potting soil. The transformation process takes approximately one month.
Once the food scraps are transformed into compost, the compost is used to enrich the soil in the community garden located near the composting site.
