In 2021, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government adopted a food sovereignty initiative with the following main objectives:
- Improve the community’s food security by incorporating a social, economic, cultural, and environmental perspective.
- Increase the community’s capacity to provide nutritious and organic sources of vegetables and medicinal herbs by extending the growing season and incorporating a food storage and processing system.
- Train community members in agricultural activities.
- Experiment with gardening practices that minimize energy use and material consumption.
To date, the community has established two greenhouses, a refrigerated storage unit, and composting facilities. More than 25 tonnes of organic waste were diverted from landfill, and the resulting compost was used to improve the soil in the community garden.
